Photography is the process, activity and art of creating still or moving pictures by recording radiation on a radiation-sensitive medium, such as a photographic film, or an electronic sensor. Photography uses foremost radiation in the UV, visible and near-IR spectrum. For common purposes the term light is used in stead of radiation. Light reflected or emitted from objects form a real image on a light sensitive area (film or plate) or a FPA pixel array sensor by means of a pin hole or lens in a device known as a camera during a timed exposure. The result on film or plate is a latent image, subsequently developed into a visual image (negative or diapositive). An image on paper base is known as a print. The result on the FPA pixel array sensor is an electrical charge at each pixel which is electronically processed and stored in a computer (raster)-image file for subsequent display or processing. Photography has many uses for business, science, manufacturing (f.i. Photolithography), art, and recreational purposes.

As far as can be ascertained, it was Sir John Herschel in a lecture before the Royal Society of London, on March 14, 1839 who made the word "photography" known to the whole world. But in an article published on February 25 of the same year in an unknown and quite anonymous newspaper called the Vossische Zeitung, Johann von Maedler, a Berlin astronomer, used the word photography already. The word photography is based on the Greek φῶς (photos) "light" and γραφή (graphé) "representation by means of lines" or "drawing", together meaning "drawing with light".

I want to learn photography, which camera should i start out with?
Q. Okay, so i'm only in high school, but i'm trying to figure out what i want to do with my life. Photography has always been something i love, but i'm just now getting into it. So my question is, what's the best camera to start out with if you are really interested in Photography?

A. Probably an entry level dslr. They can be a little overwhelming if you have little or no experience in photography, but the learning curve is steep so you'll pick it up quick. With the full manual controls, you'll be able to adjust the white balance, shutter speed, aperture, focus, etc. and see exactly how everything works in relation to each other. Also, you'll eventually learn about using different kinds of lenses. Although dslrs can be expensive (the lenses are the most expensive part), entry level dslrs are much cheaper than they use to be. Some to look at the Nikon D series (D40, D60), Canon Rebel (XTi), Olympus E series (E420, E510). Maybe look into Pentax or Sony as well. Look for a package that comes with a "kit" lens. … [cont.]

Q. hi! I'm only 16 but photography is so intresting to me! I've heard of people starting photogrpahy at a young age, but I'm not quite sure how. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'll be going to college next year and I'm planning on taking some photography classes there, but what can I do now to get a head start? Is there any suggested things to begin photographing? A. I shot my first wedding at age 13. The couple couldn't afford a "real" photographer so I volunteered, shot it for free and they bought a bunch of my (way too cheap) prints. I shot candids of my classmates in school; gave some prints away and sold additional copies. By the time I was in college I had a portrait studio in my parent's home. I also started doing advertising photography for local businesses who also couldn't afford a "real " photographer ... but they ended up paying me real money for pictures they really liked. Hope that gives you some ideas. You're never too young to start. Develop good skills and a professional attitude and your youth won't be seen as a negative by old people like me. :-)
