A library is a collection of sources, resources, and services, and the structure in which it is housed; it is organized for use and maintained by a public body, an institution, or a private individual. In the more traditional sense, a library is a collection of books. It can mean the collection, the building or room that houses such a collection, or both. The term "library" has itself acquired a secondary meaning: "a collection of useful material for common use." This sense is used in fields such as computer science, mathematics, statistics, electronics and biology. It can also be used by publishers in naming series of related books, e.g. The Library of Anglo-Catholic Theology. Libraries often provide a place of silence for studying. Public and institutional collections and services may be intended for use by people who choose not to — or cannot afford to — purchase an extensive collection themselves, who need material no individual can reasonably be expected to have, or who require professional assistance with their research. In addition to providing materials, libraries also provide the services of librarians who are experts at finding and organizing information and at interpreting information needs. However, with the sets and collection of media and of media other than books for storing information, many libraries are now also repositories and access points for maps, prints, or other documents and various storage media such as microform (microfilm/microfiche), audio tapes, CDs, cassettes, videotapes, DVDs, and video games. Libraries may also provide public facilities to access subscription databases and the Internet. Thus, modern libraries are increasingly being redefined as places to get unrestricted access to information in many formats and from many sources. They are understood as extending beyond the physical walls of a building, by including material accessible by electronic means, and by providing the assistance of librarians in navigating and analyzing tremendous amounts of information with a variety of digital tools. GNU Free Documentation License What is the best way for college libraries to reach students? Q. How can college libraries reach out to more students, and improve the visibility of libraries on campus? Should we be active in Yahoo Answers or Facebook or set up a card table in front of the cafeteria and answer questions? Should we my YouTube videos of how to use the databases? Should we require a "library skills" class that everyone has to take? What ideas am I not even thinking of? Asked by stevestone_ky - Mon Sep 10 11:15:50 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Smart students who care about their studies will automatically use the library, in fact, they'll be excited to do so. Those who choose not to use the library are not going to respond to trendy advertising. As for a required library skills class, no. It's not necessary. A university library is not that complicated and such skills are what any responsible student would teach themselves through the help of the library staff and published resources on the library webpage or in print. In my experiences, I'd say most university students do not belong in post secondary education. Quit the hand holding and the grade inflation. Let them fail and keep them out of the libraries because there are few things worse on campus than some obnoxious moron… [cont.] Answered by skunk pie - Mon Sep 10 11:26:28 2007 How can I combine two iTunes libraries, from two different computers? Q. I have two iTunes libraries, one on my mother's computer (that I used to share with her) and a new one on my own computer. Both libraries contain a significant number of songs. Some purchased, some from CDs. I cannot locate all of the CDs from my original iTunes, and would prefer to transfer the music in one easy step. Is this possible? Asked by bluiisrock13 - Wed Jan 14 17:23:59 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. For a Windows machine you just need some way to transport the files from one to another. You can burn the files to a CD or DVD, put them on a flash drive or e-mail them to yourself. First thing you need to do is locate where the all files are stored on your mom's computer. I'd start by running the library consolidation function that iTunes offers to make sure you get all the music when you do the transfer. If you go to the "File" menu in iTunes and click on "Library" and then "Consolidate Library" it will make sure that all of the files are being stored in the default storage location for iTunes on your computer. This way, if a song or two or an album or whatever for some reason isn't stored with the rest of the files it will be moved… [cont.] Answered by chicaespanola - Fri Jan 16 20:03:07 2009 What is the difference between US and UK libraries?
