A film format is a technical definition of a set of standard characteristics regarding image capture on photographic film, for either stills or movies. It can also apply to projected film, either slides or movies. The primary characteristic of a film format is its size and shape.

In the case of motion picture film, the format may also include audio parameters (though often not). Other characteristics usually include the film gauge, pulldown method, lens anamorphosis (or lack thereof), and film gate or projector aperture dimensions, all of which need to be defined for photography as well as projection, as they may differ.

Where can I get a 4x5 format film camera and is there a Digital version of this as well?
Q. I am asking because I am getting pretty serious about photography and I know that Film is going out but I want to know where I can find a nice 4x5 format camera that will shoot color and B&W film, if I can even get color film still for this format, and is there a digital form of a 4x5 format camera? I am planning two series for the spring and am hoping to have them by then. Also where can I buy the film online for a good price, besides ebay? Thanks art man. I know I was searching for 4x5 and they are spendy, however I want to go pro and I know that I want to try the 4x5 format. My teacher is going to do an independent study with me next quarter and I am planning two series. I know that film beats digital. It is going to get harder to find… [cont.]

A. The best place to get a large format camera whether it is 4x5 or 8x10 is keh.com or camerawest.com. My personal suggestion is keh.com for their excellent service and great prices. Regarding the film you shouldn't have any problems purchasing it at any well stocked professional photography shop, and because of the 4x5's view cameras unique features and capabilities film will be available for a very long time. However, to answer your question indeed there are digital backs for 4x5 cameras but they are currently out of the price range for average consumers some ranging in price from around $10,000- $30,000+. Of course these digital backs offer far greater performance than your ordinary digital slr in terms of color and megapixels (usually… [cont.]

What's the difference between 35mm and 120 medium format film?
Q. I'm looking into buying a lomography camera (holga) however it take 120 medium format film rather then 35mm. I know 35mm is more common, but what's the difference between the two? Can you still get the 120 developed in most places like walmart, costco, etc that develop 35mm?

A. I am a huge fan of 120 film format cameras, but if you are new to film photography, I would recommend going with a 35mm film camera. With 35mm film, you can get a 36 exposure roll for about the same cost as a roll of 120 film (12 or 16 exposures). Likewise, the cost of processing will be much more for the 120 film. With 35mm film, there are still many 1-hour labs that can process the film for you, and put scans of your images on a CD. Using 35mm film will allow you to shoot many more photos. You will be free of the fear of wasting film, which can be a problem when making a few bad images is all part of learning about film photography. Bad shots are taken with digital cameras, but you never really notice them because all you have to do… [cont.]

Q. I realize that there are various places that I can buy film for medium format cameras online but I was looking for stores in the area. There's plenty in San Francisco but I was wandering if there were any places in the south bay that haven't closed.
