The culture of Texas has been a melting pot of the "Southern" (Dixie) and Southwestern (Anglo-Mexican fusion) North American culture, with pockets of colonies of ethnic groups in and around metropolitan and other urban areas while the entire Rio Grande River valley, and increasingly other areas to the east and north of it, have been re-mexicized due to recent migration and high birth rates (accompanied by "white flight") among the ethnic Mexican population. All of this is due to Texas' geographic location and settler past in the United States' history. The state of Texas is a diverse ethnic-origin state predominantly due to international migration before and over its history, while at the same time very North American, and an international place to live, in part because of its many oil industries. Texas also has an influx of people from the central United States moving in to find oil. Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Michigan, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota have experienced a "brain drain" as their university graduates move to Texas to find employment.

Kentucky, Tennessee, and/or Texas? Which of these do you prefer, not prefer? Why?
Q. My top pick: TEXAS!!! Friendly folks, culture, history, Texas pride, awesome cities, beautiful country, geographical diversity, clean skies (outside the large cities,) great universities. A western sky's-the-limit and can-do-will-do attitude with Southern hospitality! Don't mess w/ TX The other two states: -Tennessee: I'm not trying to denigrate it here, b/c it's still a beautiful state in it's own right. It has friendly people, for the most part, the mountains are breathtaking, and Nashville and Memphis have a lot of history, music culture, and economic development. Beale St. is awesome! -Kentucky: I live here, I'm a native, and I can say that it sucks. No southern hospitality here. Few people say "thank you," girls don't like it when… [cont.]

A. Please stop asking the same stupid questions over and over again. If you don't like living in Kentucky, then get out of your mommy's basement and leave.

Considering a move from north Texas to either Spokane, WA or Burlington, VT. Which locale is better and why?
Q. My wife and I are in our early 30s, no kids, white collar jobs. We are looking to move someplace with more opportunities for outdoor recreation (hiking, mountain biking, fishing, skiing, etc.) than the DFW area, someplace smaller than the DFW metroplex, a place with a high quality of life and someplace with a milder climate than Texas. Nightlife and culture are also important, but we're realistic about the fact that our two "targets" (Spokane and Burlington) are not NYC or San Francisco. We've spent time in both Washington and Vermont (loved both states), but not specifically in Spokane or Burlington. Have some flexibility in that we don't need to find jobs immediately upon arrival at our destination, but would need to be employed within… [cont.]

A. If you are looking for outdoor activities, I would say Washington state. But I will say right away I have never been to Vermont. I just know that even people who have been all over the country always praise the amount of outdoor activities to be found in Washington state. If you are not that crazy about snow I would suggest you consider Seattle instead of Spokane though. Seattle rarely gets snow, and rarely goes below freezing in the winter. The job market of Seattle is much better than Spokane as well. If you want more of a downtown type of nightlife I would say Seattle would be better than Spokane. The biggest thing to decide is if you want a west coast way of life or an east coast way of life. Everyone that has lived on both coasts… [cont.]

Does anyone live in Texas?
Q. My boyfriend was thinking about moving down to Texas from Iowa. I would be moving down with him and I wanted to know the culture and environment in Texas. He was thinking of attending University of Texas, good school??? Anyway info about Texas would be helpful. Any maybe Austin is what we were thinking. Also why is real estate so cheap in Austin??? Thanks so much!!!

A. prices are cheap but payments are high. state property taxes are 2.5 to 3.5 ouch. That is changing next year. Most people will see a drop in payment of 50-150 dollars/mo. UT is hard to get into and even harder to stay in. You have to give 100% to that school to make it. Austin is liberal. the boot thing the other guy said was a little wierd.

Texas is the second-largest U.S. state in both area and population, and the largest state in the contiguous United States.

  • One objection I have heard voiced to works of this kind—dealing with Texas—is the amount of gore spilled across the pages. It can not be otherwise. In order to write a realistic and true history of any part of the Southwest, one must narrate such things, even at the risk of monotony.
  • When MacNab blanched, no more stunned than I, Rusk rose and put his arm about his shoulders: "Never forget, son, when you represent Texas, always go first class."
  • Texas is a state of mind. Texas is an obsession. Above all, Texas is a nation in every sense of the word. And there’s an opening convey of generalities. A Texan outside of Texas is a foreigner.
